Taking a Wrong Turn
Welcome to parasha Pinchas. It begins in Numbers 25:10 to 29:40. We begin this parasha by identifying exactly who Pinchas is. (actually pronounced Feen-has) He is Aharon's grandson. Pinchas didn't kill two people with a sword because he was angry. YHVH said Pinchas was zealous for "His sake" for the people of Israel, which means all the people. He wanted whatever YHVH wanted for them. That meant not mixing with Midianite women, period! The Israelite man that was killed was one of the descendants of Simeon. The Midianite woman was the daughter of one of the Midianite leaders who was a prince. So they both were not your everyday run of the mill John Does. In return for what Pinchas had done, YHVH rewarded him with bestowing on him the everlasting covenant of peace (shalom). YHVH instructs Moshe to distress the Midianites for what they had done to the Israelites. It's the age old story coming to pass, what goes around, comes around:. It's about to come around to the Midianites! After the plague, YHVH now wants Moshe and El-Azar to take a census. I know what you are thinking, oh no, not another census:! But they are nearing the time to enter the land and it would be divided up among the tribes according to their numbers. Also, it would show the number of available men to go out to war.
An analysis of the situation reveals that Simeon lost more than half its population. It went from 22,200 to 59,300. The commentators assume that was because 24,000 members of Simeon lost their lives as a result of that tribe's major role in the licentiousness of Peor, which was led by Zimri (Rashi). Then of course, the Levites were numbered. They never received an individual portion of land, but they shared the forty eight towns that were allocated to the Levites. Now we see the first female inheritance of land take place. They were called the daughters of Zelophehad. They were the descendants going all the way back to Joseph. Now if you want to see five corker names, let's take a look at these girls:. There was Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah. I especially like that Hoglah:. Smile, I'm only teasing! The girls' father died and they never had any brothers to inherit the land. So they petitioned Moshe to let 'them' inherit their father's portion. Since this had never been done before, Moshe had to ask YHVH what to do. Of course we know YHVH told Moshe to let them have the land. As a matter of fact, YHVH made this situation a precedent for all future generations. It's getting time now for Moshe to die. If you notice, it is Moshe who requests a leader be appointed to continue leading the people. Scripture doesn't tell you this, but wouldn't you think Moshe might have wanted one of his own sons to be picked as the next leader? But it says Joshua never left the tent and he was continually by Moshe's side. As Solomon said, "He who watches over the fig tree should eat its fruit". (Pro.27:18) So YHVH instructs Moshe to lay his hand upon Joshua before El-Azar and the congregation and give him authority in their sight. Notice it says Joshua was a man "who had the Spirit in him". Now weren't we told in church the Spirit couldn't have been in anyone from the Old Testament? They told us the Spirit didn't come until the book of Acts, hummm:.
YHVH must have gotten mixed up here saying that:. YHVH also says He is going to impart some of Moshe's honor upon Joshua. That word honor has several translations such as, glory, majesty and even excellence. So Moshe did as YHVH had instructed him to do in regards to Joshua. Nothing like anointing your replacement when you're going to die, one that you didn't even get to choose:. Now we are going to switch gears and go into the Sabbath and the Feasts. There was a special burnt offering that was done on the Sabbath. Also notice, there was a special offering that was done on the beginning of each new month. That was a New Moon offering folks! You remember the New Moon, that little span of time people seem to forget about:. The one span of time that gets shoved aside and not dealt with each month. It seems YHVH thought it was important enough to dedicate a special offering to it. Then we have Unleavened Bread, Passover and First Fruits. You are not to work on certain days of these feasts (I'll let you look them up and see which ones). You are not to work on Shavout (Pentacost) either. We all know you are not to eat anything with leaven in it during Passover. I believe that goes without saying, at least I hope it does:. Then we know about the Day of Blowing in the seventh month. We sound the trumpet on this day and also do no work on that day. The one day we fast on is Yom Kippur or another term used is Day of Covering.
It tells us to afflict our beings on that day (Num: 29:7). Now let's think about this. YHVH says not to cut your bodies or tattoo them. He's not into self mutilation. He doesn't want you to cut yourself, or beat yourself, or flail yourself to afflict your being. So how could we afflict our fleshly beings without hurting the Temple of YHVH, our bodies? If it was spiritual, I suppose we could afflict them by NOT reading our word or maybe NOT praying. Do you think that would afflict our 'spiritual being', I think so? But it's not speaking of afflicting your spiritual being here. No, it simply means to deny your "fleshly being" what it craves for twenty four hours, which is food and water. But Yom Kippur is also about a day of repentance. It's even more about reflecting on your life during the past year and seeing how you conducted yourself and how you can do better in the coming year. Then let's not forget Sukkot, or otherwise known as The Feast of Booths. During this time seventy bulls were offered up, a picture of the seventy nations. None of YHVH'S seven feasts were ever done away with, although we have all been taught that in our lives. Well at least many of us were taught that:. But now YHVH is restoring truth for lies in these end time days. He's bringing everyone back on the right track together. No wonder there are so many denominations out there, no one is following His book! People are picking and choosing which parts they want to accept in their lives.
They are taking away entire chunks of the Scripture and telling people that particular part of Scripture has been done away with. Others have turned a blind eye to the identity of the Messiah Yeshua. It's time to put all the book together, the way it was meant to be! Let's start following the King with His kingdom, not man made religions. The Torah should be the roadmap for your life! Somewhere though, people took a wrong turn and refused to stop and ask for directions!! See you next time over on the correct route. Shalom
